New Palace in Meersburg

1775 - 1955

Draft of d`Ixnard

Under Maximilian Christoph of Rodt (ruled 1775-1800) the New Palace was to fulfill its function as a residence of the prince bishop for another 25 years.  During this time the apartments on the Beletage (principle floor) were adorned with wall paneling according to designs by Pierre Michel d’Ixnard and modern furniture was purchased.  In 1802 the New Palace became the possession of the later Grand Duchy of Baden in the course of Secularization.  The furniture and art objects were sold, auctioned off or distributed among other palaces in Baden.

Well into the 20th century, the New Palace was used for a variety of purposes and served at various times as a district prison, a "Fräuleininstitut" (institute for unmarried young ladies) or a high school.  In 1955 the palace is turned over to the state of Baden-Württemberg by the French occupying forces.
